Those black streaks are Gloeocapsa magma — algae that eats the limestone in your shingles. We remove it with a gentle soft wash at a maximum of 50 PSI. No pressure damage, ever.
Black streaks running down a roof aren’t cosmetic — they’re a colony of algae slowly consuming the limestone filler in your asphalt shingles. Left alone, it shortens roof life and can bake extra heat into your attic. Moss and lichen are worse: their roots physically lift shingles and open the door to leaks.
Never let anyone pressure wash an asphalt roof. High pressure strips the protective granules and can void your shingle warranty. Nando’s cleans roofs exclusively by soft washing at a maximum of 50 PSI — about the strength of a garden hose — using a detergent mix that kills the growth and lets the weather rinse it away completely.
We inspect the roof, protect surrounding landscaping, and apply our soft wash mix from the safety of ladders and roof-safe access points. Algae dies on contact; heavier moss browns and releases over the following weeks as it decomposes — that’s normal and means the treatment is working at the root.

Algae streaks typically disappear during the wash itself. Thick moss dies immediately but releases gradually over the following weeks as weather carries it off — no pressure needed.
In the Panhandle’s humid climate, most roofs stay clean 3–5 years after a proper soft wash. Heavily shaded roofs may need attention a bit sooner.
